Rauchverbot? But rauch is good for you! I guess I’ll have to go engage in my healthy practices away from the flightline.

English theatre producer and director Jonathan Miller was a regular guest on the Dick Cavett show . Before one of his appearances , Cavett found Miller backstage, smoking a cigarette. Cavett said, “You know those things will kill you.” Miller took a luxurious draw from his cigarette and said, “Yes, I know, but I’m fairly certain this particular one won’t.”

And over 50 years later, that basic airframe is still a workhorse for firefighting.

In 2007 I was flying for a charter company and filled in as a relief pilot for their Puerto Rico operation for a week. There was a 440 being used by a freight operation parked outside our maintenance hangar , and I got to witness a few really smoky starts. Saw a few Gooney Birds (piston and turboprop) flown by other freight dogs that week also. You just don’t see them anymore in the US, although maybe in southern FL? Neat stuff for an airplane geek.

And even sexier with turboprops.

You might catch some in the Alaskan or Canadian bush. It’s great to see those old birds still hauling the mail.
